Lunar New Year is always a boisterous and bustling time of the year for the Chinese. It is a celebration of customs and rituals amongst feasting, reunions and festivities. You can read more about the traditions here.
Amidst these celebrations, we are subconsciously practising tolerance in multi-racial Singapore. Social Defence, which is about “living harmoniously and looking out for one another”, is one of the five pillars of Total Defence. In 1942 during World War II, Singapore fell to the Japanese. Every year, on 15 February, we commemorate Total Defence Day not only to strengthen our resolve to keep Singapore safe, but also as a reminder of what could happen to us if we do not do our part to defend Singapore.

Aside from listening to Chinese New Year music, let us take a moment to reflect on what makes us truly Singaporean, and make a commitment to protect all that we love.
